David Todd Rawlings was born in North Smithfield (Rhode Island) and is a guitarist, songwriter, producer, and singer. His musical style is best described as a blend of alternative country (a sub-genre of country music that incorporates influences ranging from roots rock, bluegrass, rockabilly, honky-tonk, alternative rock, folk rock, and punk rock), folk, bluegrass (a genre that takes roots from Irish, Scottish and English traditional music, and was also later influenced by the music of African Americans through incorporation of jazz elements), old time (a genre of North American folk music that developed along with various North American folk dances - such as square dancing, clogging, and buck dancing - and is played on acoustic instruments), and Americana (contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, blues, roots rock, R&B, folk, and bluegrass, resulting in a distinctive roots oriented sound). He's had a stellar career with 3 studio albums and he's also collaborated with many renowned bands and artists such as Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, Ani DiFranco, Old Crow Medicine Show, Robyn Hitchcock, The Whispertown 2000, and Sara Watkins. He fronts his own band is also known for his partnership with singer and songwriter Gillian Welch.
