Gillian Howard Welch was born in New York City in 1967 and is a singer, songwriter, and multi instrumentalist (banjo and drums). Her musical style is best described as a blend of Americana (contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots oriented sound), bluegrass (a genre that takes roots from Irish, Scottish and English traditional music, and was also later influenced by the music of African Americans through incorporation of jazz elements), folk, country, and old-time (a style of North American folk music that’s played on acoustic instruments, generally centering on a combination of fiddle and plucked string instruments - most often the guitar and banjo). She’s had a stellar career with 5 studio albums, 4 music videos, and her music has been featured in many compilation and soundtrack albums. She’s received many accolades including 3 International Bluegrass Music Awards (for Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year, Album of the Year, and Recorded Event of the Year), 3 Academy of Country Music Awards (for Album of the Year), a Grammy Award (for Album of the Year), and 2 Americana Music Association Awards (for Artist of the Year and Lifetime Achievement for Songwriting).
