Gregory Porter was born in Sacramento in 1971 and is a singer, songwriter, and actor. His musical style is best described as a blend of post bop (a modern jazz style that continues the distinguishing characteristics that separate jazz from the world of pop and rock), straight ahead jazz (a term used to describe any jazz from the '70s onward that is not influenced by fusion and adheres closely to the historical traditions of jazz), contemporary jazz (a genre usually characterized by some combination of fusion music, pop jazz, smooth jazz, crossover jazz, and contemporary funk), vocal jazz (an instrumental approach to the voice, where the singer can match the instruments in their stylistic approach to the lyrics, improvised or otherwise, or through scat singing), soul, and gospel. He’s had a stellar career with 4 studio albums, 1 live album, 1 extended play, 9 singles, and he’s collaborated with Laura Mvula, Disclosure, Buddy Guy, Kentyah, M-1, Brian Jackson, The New Midnight Band , Jools Holland and His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, Dianne Reeves, Renée Fleming, Andreas Varady, and many other renowned artists. He’s received many accolades including 2 Grammy Awards (for Best Jazz Vocal Album).
