John McLaughlin was born in Doncaster (West Riding of Yorkshire, England) in 1942 and is a guitarist, bandleader and composer. He’s widely regarded as the leading guitarist in jazz and jazz fusion (a genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined aspects of jazz harmony and improvisation with styles such as funk, rock, rhythm and blues, and Latin jazz). His musical style also includes elements of rock, Indian classical music, Western classical music, flamenco, and blues. His guitar playing is renowned for its aggressive speed, technical precision, harmonic sophistication, exotic scales, and unconventional time signatures. Prominent guitarists such as Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Mike Stern, Al Di Meola, Shawn Lane, and Scott Henderson, Greg Ginn (of Black Flag), Omar Rodríguez-López (of The Mars Volta), Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, and even Frank Zappa, who said: "A person would be a moron not to appreciate McLaughlin's technique. The guy has certainly found out how to operate a guitar as if it were a machine gun…” He’s had a stellar career with 19 solo albums, 8 live albums, and he’s collaborated with John Surman, Dave Holland, Karl Berger, Chick Corea, Stu Martin, Carlos Santana, Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucía, and many others.
