Shawn Colvin was born in Vermillion (South Dakota) in 1956 and is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She began her musical journey at the age of 10 by learning to play the guitar. She was influenced by her father’s music collection (which included artists such as Peter Seeger and the Kingston Trio) and she went on to create a style that’s best described as a blend of contemporary folk and Americana (contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots oriented sound). Her breakthrough came in 1997 with one of her singles (Sunny Came Home) topping Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart for 4 weeks straight. She went on to have a stellar career with 9 studio albums, 1 live album, 1 split album (with Steve Earle), 2 video albums, and she’s collaborated with James Taylor, Béla Fleck, Edwin McCain, Shawn Mullins, and Sting. She’s received many accolades including 3 Grammy Awards (for Best Contemporary Folk Album, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year) and an Americana Music Association’s Trailblazer Award. She’s also been nominated for 7 more Grammy Awards.
